the immaculate conceptions liner notes

our online liner notes are never quite liner notes, really. but maybe this one will be.

first of all, we don't really always write with only lower-case letters, just on this website. we know it looks all twee and stuff, so we're doing it for that reason. we're being ironic about tweeness, which is kind of funny if you think about it. we're being ironic about being indie. how hilarious is that?

we were a concept before we were a band. we were liza and rusty, and we were a couple, and so we needed a band. rusty came up with the name. the name was so good we had to do something, but we didn't right away. rusty wrote a song, which wasn't very good, and it was too complicated and real. we thought the ukulele might be the way to go. the ukulele and the world's smallest tambourine. but we didn't do anything right away.

we finally did, in May 2002 after we weren't a couple anymore, just to spite ourselves. liza said she was less worried about sounding stupid and also better at coming up with stuff when driving, so we drove. we drove an hour and a half to the coast to gamble twenty dollars apiece. we knew by this point that whatever came out that resembled a song would be on the record, and some things that didn't.

we ended up with forty-three tracks. one of them was over twelve minutes long. the shortest was four seconds. most were in between.

we forgot to tell you that we actually recorded one song in 2000, after coming up with the name. we recorded it on video, and you can see liza playing the guitar on it and hear rusty singing it while holding the camera. we didn't forget to tell you yet that after we recorded the on-the-road songs, we liked one of them well enough that we did a full-blown studio version of it. that was us being fancy, just to prove we could. we hope you like that one even if you hate the others.

that's us up there, by the way, with halos. that's our dog, kiska, as an angel. liza drew the front cover, and she also drew the sleepwalking girl (which is her) who appears on the cd itself (and on the bio page). we're on the beach, where we recorded a few songs and where we stopped before we gambled.

we also think it's funny that we sold t-shirts and such things before we recorded any songs. we still sell those, and more of them. we like them a lot, and think you should buy them. we make one dollar profit from each we sell, which we then split to get fifty cents apiece. which might win us a dollar apiece at video black jack. you can help us get two bucks.

love and letters music naturally picked us up, because that's who they are and that's who we are. we belong here so much. we love letters and music also, even though that's not what that name means, though we're not sure what it means. we enjoy all records sold here.

we're into money. we think you should be into spending it, and giving it to us and our friends. just write us a check if you love us as much as we love you. we need money for gas and backyard burgers. we only bring this up to be honest. we're an honest crew. if we're also being honest, we might say that liza is not fruity nutcake, but she is a nutty fruitcake. she is.

listen to this record. it's good. it's long, over an hour--eleven minutes over an hour. that's a long time. you can program it however you like, as well. there are at least fourteen good tracks on here, so find those and listen to them over and over. we might not make another one of these, unless you get lucky. remember the chance you've been given and act accordingly.
